That suggests that "take work" means "require you to put in effort". If you can guess at the meaning, you just need to look at the dictionary and see if you can find a definition that fits. Yes, you sometimes have to scroll down through 26 or more definitions, but these things take work.
In effect they're very similar, but "try harder" (and at least to an extent "make more of an effort" as well) leaves open the possibility that more effort may still not lead to success. "Work harder" says nothing about whether success can be expected or not, although the implication is that more effort leads to success.
