I would do this by customizing the default user profile, simply selecting Show hidden files and folders and Show extensions in folder options and copying this setting to default user profile which is then used in all future user accounts.

It should be. These were likely went into the Recycle Bin with the Hidden attribute and thus remained hidden. Edit: Whoa wait a minute. I just sent a hidden file to the Recycle Bin, changed my Folder Options setting to "Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives" but this file is still fully visible while sitting in the Recycle Bin.

Looking at the attributes, it does not appear to be flagged as system or hidden. What is the mechanism at work here, then? Why wasn't it good enough to just flag the folder as hidden? Makes me wonder what other secrets are hiding deep in the jungle of the Windows 7 user profile, or in other places.
