The river gives its name to the Thames Valley, a region of England around the river between Oxford and West London; the Thames Gateway; and the overlapping Thames Estuary around the tidal Thames to the east of London and including the waterway itself.
The Thames is crossed at a number of points, including 16 bridges in Greater London alone. Most are road and rail bridges, but some, such as the Golden Jubilee Bridges and the aforementioned Millennium Bridge accommodate pedestrians.
Starting as a small trickle in the Cotswolds the River Thames travels over 210 miles through the heart of some of England’s most picturesque towns, right into the centre of London and eventually, out into the North Sea.
It flows southeast through Oxford, Reading, Windsor, and London, before reaching the North Sea via the Thames Estuary. It is the most important river in England, supporting millions of people and businesses along its banks.
