I've heard swarming mentioned in the context of Agile or Extreme Programming. It seems to be a complement to pairing. What exactly is it? When should it be applied? How do you do it well?
Swarming might be a chance to ensure that multiple people learn how to do this. Assuming that you have an unavoidable dependency between Product Backlog Items (PBI), I would consider all dependent PBIs as blocked until the the blocking dependency is addressed. In general, this means leaving the blocked PBIs out of a Sprint.
And to expand on the comment about not measuring developer output using story points, if your makes a habit of breaking stories into concrete developer tasks, you could end up with two or more developers working on a story. Related buzzword: Swarming. How can you possibly attribute story points to an individual's output? You can't.
You find some smaller amount of work..."? Do you mean that you add a new smaller story to the sprint in progress? What usually happens for us is we finish the carry-over stories and most of the rest of the stories in the sprint, but not all. I would suggest swarming on the remaining stories but with test data and QA env. issues that doesn't help.
