Lemon Tree: I did the humidifier and more lighting and it popped out new leaves in February (yay!) with a bunch of buds, but it now feels like it stalled. I found spider mites on the tree, so I have been trying to wipe down the effected leaves and stems with a wet paper towel as often as I can.
Yellowing of lemon tree leaves can be a sign of various issues, including chlorosis (see the leaf in image 20230608). That leaf shows all the typical symptoms of chlorosis: yellow background and green leaf veins.
According to Iowa State University Extension, the average acid level of fresh lemon juice is about 5 percent, thus the “natural strength” labeling on the lemon juice bottle. So though more labels might contain this statement now, the 5 percent acidity should be the same, and bottled lemon juice is still recommended for canning.
My (indoor) Meyer lemon tree has been rapidly dropping leaves. At first I thought it was because I was overwatering it (the leaves would pale and shri...
Do I need to add lemon juice when canning applesauce? If yes, how much per quart/pint?
This recipe does not require adding lemon juice, but it must be processed in a pressure canner to have a safe product. Pints process for 20 minutes, and quarts process for 25; make sure to use the correct pressure based on your elevation.
I made a batch of ratatouille using the Moosewood Cookbook recipe. Can I add lemon juice and do hot water method of canning? Can I do something to make this recipe canning-safe? My other choice is the freezer, but prefer to can it-- it has tomatoes, zuchini, onions, eggplant and seasonings.
Hi Sue, Thanks for reaching out. The lemon juice added to most canned tomato recipes is an essential ingredient for safety because tomatoes are often not acidic enough to prevent the growth of bacterial spores that cause botulism poisoning. If you are using a recipe that calls for lemon juice, and you finished your canning without lemon juice more than , the contents are ...
Hello- Last night I dehydrated some lemon peel to make dried zest. I used fresh lemons purchased at the store. I scrubbed them under running water prior to cutting. I trimmed all but a very thin layer of pith away from the peel and avoided any skin with blemishes. I dried for over 6 hours at 135F in my presto dehydrator, which is in good working condition. There was no pink visible anywhere on ...
Since you mention specifically that the leaves are dropping off of both the Meyer Lemon and the Key Lime trees, I will address that issue primarily: First of all, it is easy to overwater Meyer lemons: Overwatering saturates the tree and the soil around it causing nutrient deficiencies and diseases. The main sign of overwatering is yellowing and leaves falling off the tree. Overwatering the ...
Hi, it is lovely that your lemon tree is flowering! I hope that you are enjoying it's fragrant blooms. There are several things that could be causing your lemon tree to drop it's leaves. First, have you moved it recently? Either inside, outside, or simply further from a window? Lemon trees and other citrus trees need high light and warm temperatures. If you're going to start acclimating it to ...

Thanks for your Meyer lemon tree question. According to the USDA, your hardiness zone in Clark County is 9a (so gets down to 20 to 25 degrees F). Meyer lemon trees are hardy down to zone 8, so you shouldn't have too much of a cold issue. Having said that, if you anticipate that temperatures will get below freezing, you might want to take precautions. I can find no reliable source that ...
Meyer lemon trees are a great addition to your living space with the attractive tree, fragrant blossoms and fruit. They tend to easily drop their blossoms and fruit, though. 70-80% of blossoms fail to set fruit, a week later small pea-sized fruit drops, and golf-ball sized fruit drops in the spring. While they bloom all year, main bloom times are fall and early spring. Lemons take 6 months to ...
A lemon tree grown from seed will naturally try to grow into a large tree and may eventually become unmanageable as a houseplant. Refer to our web page on citrus for details on soil, fertilizing, pruning, and other plant care practices.
This is a safe substitution because lemon juice is more acidic (lower pH), than vinegar. On the Ball and Kerr recipes, I suggest contacting the customer service department for an answer to your question.

Hi, In the USDA recipes for salsa, it is safe to substitute bottled lemon or lime juice for the vinegar in the recipes that call for vinegar. It is substituted on a cup for cup basis (i.e. equal amounts). This is a safe substitution because lemon juice is more acidic (lower pH), than vinegar. On the Ball and Kerr recipes, I suggest contacting the customer service department for an answer to ...
