Eric is a 2024 British psychological thriller television drama created by Abi Morgan for the streaming service Netflix. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a distraught puppeteer whose young son goes missing in 1980s New York City. The script was written by Morgan with Lucy Forbes directing and Holly Pullinger producing the series. The series was released on 30 May 2024.
What is Eric about? Vincent (Cumberbatch) is one of New York’s leading puppeteers and creator of the hugely popular children’s television show Good Day Sunshine. But his life unravels when his 9-year-old son goes missing on the way to school. “ Eric is a dark and crazy journey into the heart of ’80s New York — and the good, bad, and ugly world of Vincent,” Morgan told Netflix.
Eric is essentially a drama about dealing with the open wound that a missing person (particularly a child) leaves behind. In this respect it is a darkly comic watch because of the juxtaposition of the pain (arguments, anger, profanity, alcoholism) against the child like muppet show style characters.
