Picard's family host offered such a huge insight in to the character that I really appreciated. Many of the character beats landed well. Jurati's Borg was a fun take on a stale concept. The Bad: Q and the whole time travel set up. It tries to carry a heavy personal stake for Picard but it's way feels tacked on vs. more organic too Picard.

Without Picard it would've been a different show. The same thing applies to all Treks, I think, you can get rid of pretty much any character and the show will be the same show, but if you swap captains it'll be a reboot even if all the other characters remain.
Picard S3 was about saying goodbye and passing the torch, and that felt right. I'm trying to tell myself that I can't say whether I'll like this project or not, what with so little to go on. But considering where we left things with the TNG crew, this movie seems thematically wrongheaded.

To answer the question given, in the course of the series, I’d say yes. Seasons one and two offer up texture to where Picard, Riker, Troi and Seven are and introduce Raffi. If I want to be contrary, and I sometimes do, I could argue that season three is unnecessary. It’s the outlier here based on cast and storytelling.

Also, there's the Ferengi in Captain's Holiday who Picard punches in the nose, but again, my memory is foggy. Actually that episode with Riker was "Time Arrow" Part 2.
