Consett is a former steel-making town in County Durham, in the hills 14 miles southwest of Newcastle. In 2021 the population was 29,885. "Consett" derives from Cunecsheafod, Cunec's headland - it's on a steep bank above the River Derwent at 900 ft / 270 m elevation, distinctly chilly in winter.
