(Note that the default user preference in most browsers is for new tabs, so a trivial test on a browser where that preference hasn't been changed will not demonstrate this.) CSS3 proposed target-new, but the specification was abandoned.
New does not guarantee heap allocation and simply avoiding new does not guarantee stack allocation. New is always used to allocate dynamic memory, which then has to be freed. By doing the first option, that memory will be automagically freed when scope is lost.
