Adena Health has been providing comprehensive healthcare to your friends, family and neighbors in south central and southern Ohio for over 120 years.
The Adena culture was centered on the location of the modern state of Ohio, but also extended into contiguous areas of Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Southern Wisconsin and parts of extreme western Pennsylvania.
With offices across key markets, Adena brings deep regional expertise backed by the strength of an integrated builder. We work where relationships matter, deploy teams where they’re needed most, and stay close enough to take full responsibility for the outcome.
The Adena people were not a single tribe, but rather, a group of indigenous people that shared similarities in artifact style, architecture, and other cultural practices, including a common burial and ceremonial system that included mound building.
This strongly suggests that they are at least partially descended from the Adena People. Although these tribes originated on the Atlantic Coast of the Maritime Provinces and Maine, they were living in the Great Lakes region, when French and English explorers arrived.
Adena culture, culture of various communities of ancient North American Indians, about 500 bc–ad 100, centred in what is now southern Ohio. Groups in Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, and possibly Pennsylvania bear similarities and are roughly grouped with the Adena culture.
The Adena are an archaeological culture, meaning that they did not call themselves “Adena” and likely would not have identified themselves as one group. Rather, archaeologists have grouped Adena sites together based on shared traits, such as mortuary practices and what types of tools they used.
The Adena settlement system consisted of small, dispersed communities usually living on secondary River terraces or along valley rims. Floodplain and primary terrace sites are relatively rare until late Adena.
The Adena were mound builders, best known for the burial mounds that still stand today at places in West Virginia and the neighboring region. The Adena culture was named for the Adena Estate near Chilicothe, Ohio, the location of a major Adena-era mound.
