I know it's the ports because when I have the cable just right, it works. Breathe on it wrong and it I might still have picture, but lose control over changing channels, or the audio starts sounding tinny.
Seems to me it is an issue with router/network at your parents place. I'll suggest you reach out to the network provider and ask them to open these ports for you.
