(The continuation with the parallel construction who stood apart illustrates how The Age style can lead to inconsistencies.) The Asian series (James Clavell, the books are Shogun, Gai-Jin, King Rat, and Whirlwind, although I might be leaving one out. Can never remember if King Rat is part of it or not.)
