Martha Jane Coston ( – ) was an American inventor and businesswoman who invented the Coston flare, a device for signaling at sea, and the owner of the Coston Manufacturing Company.

Martha Coston invented a system of pyrotechnic signal flares that not only gave the U.S. Navy a great advantage in communication during the Civil War, but also advanced boating safety worldwide. Coston was born Martha Hunt in Baltimore in 1826.

After years of directing a team of chemists, Coston realized that she could apply the technology of fireworks to her plans. She finally invented and patented a system of red, white, and green "Pyrotechnic Night Signals" that worked well (patent #23,536, granted in 1859).

Martha J. Coston was an innovative inventor and entrepreneur born in 1828 in Baltimore, Maryland. After experiencing significant personal losses, including the deaths of her husband and several children, she dedicated herself to realizing her late husband's vision for a signaling flare system designed for maritime communication.

Martha Coston overcame 19th-century gender stereotypes to help change the course of the Civil War, as well as boating safety. Learn more about her invention of the signal flare on our blog.
