It's SOP to inspect & gap new spark plugs to your desired gap before installing them. They could have been dropped, thereby changing the gap, etc. NEVER assume they are gapped correctly out of the box. How does the manufacturer know what YOU are going to gap them at?
Here's the problem, the stihl setting gage seems to set the air gap too tight, like 0.004" measured between the ignition module arms and the flywheel magnets using a feeler gage set. It seems as though the center coil pick up on the ignition module has a wider air gap. Now my question, what is the proper way to measure an ignition module air gap?

The deck lid is slightly curved as well but probably only has about a 1/32nd gap in the middle, but combined with the 1/8" gap on the quarter it causes a noticeable problem. I tried using a 5' long wood clamp I have to pull the quarters together at the middle of the trunk opening and they wouldn't budge.

Rule of thumb for a naturally aspirated engine 0.004" gap per inch of bore so in your case you should shoot for 0.016-0.017" (4.155 x 0.004) ideally. If your gap is 0.032" you probably don't have the correct rings for your 402 (4.125" + 0.030). Just my guess and the reason I always get file fit rings! I use this piston ring grinder from ABS Products.

If the gap moves with the traction bar, you have a bad bar. EDIT: Or (if you have a digital level) you can remove the traction bars and sit them on a flat surface with the mounting plates of the bars facing upwards. Place the digital level on the mounting plate of the first bar and take a reading.

The key is, if the compression ratio goes up, drop the gap down. GM made a real mistake with HEI performance during their Oldsmobile years, they specified a spark plug gap of .060, and even later, .080.
