I’m from North Georgia in the foothills of the Appalachian mtns and have an old friend that’s told me about prairie dog hunting in the Dakota's years ago. It’s always been on my bucket list of things to do, along with SD Pheasants, ND pothole ducks and Co/wy bugling elk. This May/June, I...

If I had to shoot prairie dogs or rodents for a living it would be a .223 AI - cheap buckets of available brass, long barrel life, long brass life, more available small rifle primers, wide selection of bullets, small powder charges, huge variety of suitable powders & the sharp shoulder reduces case trimming frequency.
Prairie dog hunting has changed dramatically for those of us that have to travel a far piece to enjoy it. Covid shut myself and my shooting partner down for two of the last three years and last year, we went to a new property in Western South Dakota that was a real disappointing one day affair. What had changed was the access fees to hunting ...

I had the opportunity to visit Ross Spagrud yesterday at his Prairie Gun Works in Winnipeg - really enjoyed the opportunity to see a bunch of fine rifles in many stages of completion including several which were ready for shipment. Ross obviously knows his stuff and his rifles show a lot of...

I have never been prairie dog hunting, but am looking to start doing it in 2025. I have my first build almost done, which is an AR15 in 223 with a 1:8 twist 24” WOA varmint barrel. I am hoping to shoot the 53g V-max with this upper. Everything I read on the topic says to take several...
Sorry for your experience but sadly it’s not the exception. Agree on cartridges too. This forum is long range hunting, all of us like the challenges but 600 yards at a prairie dog in high winds that gust and switch is not my cup of tea.

New to forum, reminded me how much fun prairie dog hunting was. Anyone know of current hunting grounds? My dad used to go on organized hunts up in Montana and Wyoming, always had a great time. Now that I am semi retired, I would love to attend one. Last post I saw, was from 2021. Any updates...
I’m limited to two rifles for my prairie dog trip. Don’t ask why. so the tikka varmint 223 is coming along with its favorite Fiocchi 50 vmax Ammo. About 1,000 rounds for 2 days. I have to decide on rifle 2 22 Creedmoor with 300 rounds of 75 ELDM or 6.5 Creedmoor with 400 + rounds of 120...

For a desiganated prairie dog gun - pretty hard to beat a 204 ruger! Totally agree. I have a Ruger No 1 .204 but it just isn't as accurate as I would like - maybe I should put a bit more effort into it. My go to gun is a Rem 700 .223 Rem. I shoot about 1000 PDs every summer.
Has anyone shot Prairie dogs around Medicine Bow WY? In late spring is it so windy that you need to tie your auto to a Tree or anchor it to the ground? LOL Seriously is the wind manageable for long shots off a shooting bench

Planning to build/buy my dad a rifle for prairie dog hunting. He's expressed interest in a .22-250 but the buddy he will be hunting with shoots anywhere from 400 yards to 600 yards and in our state of South Dakota the wind always blows at least 10mph - 25mph it seems. I have wondered if a .22...
Alright guys, I have a trip coming up at the end of June and having some dilemma on which rifles to take with me. Thought it would be fun to start a poll, see what your guys' favorite calibers are for prairie dogs. I've limited the poll to the calibers I have rifles chambered in and have ample...
