I've just had to recover my profiles from a back copy because Chrome data got corrupted and I didn't get them back until I restored the upper level folder, that is, C:\Users\YOURUSERNAMEHERE\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data. It took a while because it's huge (mine is ~8 GB and Google is not even my primary browser).
