I also have Wellmark BCBS of Iowa but have the Lap Band. I went through Mercy Center of Weight Loss and they helped me get approved and the program helped me with all the hoops that had to be jumped through before surgery. Wellmark covers the DS if your BMI is 50+, so you should be covered. Here is a LINK to the WLS policy. Does anyone know if Wellmark requires a 6 month Dr. supervised diet? The policy doens't specifically say that, but one of the surgeons I consulted said they do. I am looking at getting the VSG, but they still consider it investigational.
I have Wellmark Alliance Select BlueRx Preferred Iowa Governmental Health Care Plan. Obesity Surgery is covered in my plan (page 38 in the manual). I had to call U of I to preregister for my initial consultation last night. The lady I spoke with said that my plan paid well and I should have no problem with it.

My husband's insurance is Wellmark BC/BS and it still covers WLS with 3 years of physician supervised weight loss attempts, but his employer has a written exclusion to ALL treatments of obesity, whether surgery or prescription drugs, or weight loss programs. His employee benefits handbook is worded the exact same way.
